Hal Schott

Dr. Schott received his DVM degree in 1984 from The Ohio State University. He started his career with three years in private equine practice in Southern California. Dr. Schott subsequently completed a residency in equine internal medicine and a PhD in exercise physiology at Washington State University. Since 1995, Dr. Schott has been an equine medicine clinician at Michigan State University with clinical interests in urinary tract and endocrinological disorders. In addition, he continues to pursue a research interest of fluid and electrolyte balance in endurance horses and critically ill horses. Further, in 2017 Dr. Schott started the Equine Welfare in Practice annual clinical clerkship for final year DVM students in which he takes students to provide care for working equids in rural Mexican communities, in collaboration with veterinarians and students from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and Universidad Veracruzana. Dr. Schott and his colleagues were awarded the MSU Award for Community Engaged Teaching for this program in 2021. In 2022 Dr. Schott received both the Zoetis Distinguished Veterinary Teacher Award for MSU faculty as well as the Distinguished Educator (Academic) Award from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). In 2023 he received the Washington State University Graduate Alumni Award to honor distinguished PhD graduates for excellence in research, teaching, and service. In 2024 Dr. Schott received the Zoetis sponsored Good Works 1st place Award from the AAEP, in recognition of the Equine Welfare in Practice annual clinical clerkship.
